Thank you for this wonderfull video.
I can't believe John McCormac left out the most important verse. Third Verse (After the rains, he goes to his Confessor and begs for a coat to replace the one that "The false & cruel Molly stole as she slipped out of his lovelife and left him alone, for to die..) I went and told my tale to Father McDonnell, ma’am And then I went and ax’d advice of Councillor O’Connell, ma’am He told me promise-breeches had been ever since the world began Now, I have only one pair, ma’am, and they are corduroy Arrah! what could he mean, ma’am, or what would you advise me to ? Must my corduroys to Molly go? In troth I’m bothered what to do I can’t afford to lose both my heart and my breeches too Yet what need I care when I’ve only to die. It seems the old songs are soon forgotten. The way I transcribed it from an old 78 rpm record was: I went and told my tale to the Councillor O’Connell, ma’am And then I went a plied my fate to good Father O’Donner, Ma’am Says he ‘Ne’er a pair of pants been lent since Adam left the promised land And Now I’ve only one pair and they’re corduroy!’ Arragh! What could he mean, ma’am and what advice to give have you? Are my britches for to Molly gone? In troth I’m bothered what to do I can’t afford to lose both my heart and my britches too Unloved and undressed am I and oh that false and cruel one To leave me in the manner I was born for to die. It sets the tone for the funerary request in the last verse. Otherwise it a case of larceny and not love lost, at all. Yours truly,
